Estevan: An Incredible Community
This past weekend I found myself in Estevan, Saskatchewan.
I had been asked to perform at a fundraiser for Kurtis Herbert and his family.
On August 9th, at 18 years old Kurtis was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a very rare form of the disease. Faced with a battery of treatments and currently undergoing chemotherapy in Regina – this young man has an incredible battle ahead. A bone marrow donor has been found, and Kurtis will be travelling to Seattle to for the transplant.
The community of Estevan rallied around the Herbert family Saturday night. The show was a complete sell out and the live auction was a huge success. As announced at the end of the evening Saturday a total of just over $25,000 was raised for Kurtis and his family.
The crowd on Saturday night was incredible. The circumstances under which the community united may not have been the happiest, but the positivity, love, and warmth of the crowd was unlike anything I have ever felt from an audience before.
I commend the organizers, volunteers, and ticket holders who participated in Saturday’s fundraiser. You have done a great thing, and should be very, very, proud.
To Kurtis – I didn’t have a chance to meet you on Saturday night, but, I heard a lot about you. You sound like an incredible young man – many people spoke of your strength and your smile. Stay positive, stay strong, keep fighting, and don’t stop smiling.
My thoughts are with you and your family.
A trust account has been set up at the Spectra Credit Union in Estevan for Kurtis. If you wish to make a donation please contact the Estevan Spectra Credit Union at (306) 636-7700 and ask for the “Herbert Family Trust Account”
Thoughtfully Yours...
